"Cognitive Therapy for Hallucinations and Delusions"

Thursday - Cognitive Therapy (CT) for Hallucinations By the end of this day the participants will have seen DVD clips or role plays of all the key CT techniques in working with hallucinations. They will also have had the chance to practice some of these techniques. The day will cover CT models of hallucinations and developing collaborative working formulations, normalising voice hearing to reduce stigma, generating alternative explanations and developing coping strategies using distraction, focusing and metacognitive change. Behavioural experiments will be described to engage the voice hearing experience. Case examples will be presented describing schema change strategies, compassion based CBT approaches for critical hallucinations and how to work with trauma linked to hallucinations.
Friday - CT for Delusions By the end of this cutting edge workshop participants will have seen DVD clips or seen role plays of all the key CT techniques for delusions. They will have had the chance to practice some of these techniques in group or individual format. The day will cover CT models of delusion formation and maintenance including vulnerabilities. Participants will guided through the process of developing formulations and have the chance to develop their own working formulations during practical exercises. CT techniques for working with acute delusions will be described and demonstrated. Techniques for normalising delusions will be outlined along with other engagement styles. CT approaches to generate alternative explanations and then use behavioural experiments to reality test delusions will be worked with in relation to a number of diverse delusional themes. The pertinence of formulation to delusional content and insight change will be covered. The day will end with detailed descriptions of how to work with complex delusional systems including grandiose delusions and delusional memory.

Professor Douglas Turkington, MD, Professor of Psychosocial Psychiatry and Consultant Psychiatrist, School of Neurology, Neurobiology and Psychiatry,Newcastle University, UK: Professor Turkington is a major research figure within the history of the development of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for schizophrenia. Professor Turkington has project managed a number of high impact randomized controlled trials in CBT of schizophrenia as well as continuing with a busy clinical caseload with the Liaison Psychiatry service of Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Trust. His work has strongly influenced the NICE guidelines which recommended the routine use of CBT for the treatment of schizophrenia. Professor Turkington has also lectured widely throughout Europe and North America on the CBT techniques to be used with particular psychotic presentations. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and founding fellow of the Faculty of Cognitive Therapy in Philadelphia and has written more than 100 articles on the subject of CBT in schizophrenia. He has also with Professor David Kingdon co-authored 3 highly influential books on CBT for schizophrenia. Currently he is working on a CBT self help book for psychotic patients and carers.
Dr. Alison Brabban, University of Durham, UK Alison works a Consultant Clinical Psychologist in the Early Intervention in Psychosis service in Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust in the north of England. Beyond her day to day clinical work she has a keen interest in promoting the implementation of psychological therapies for psychosis. She is currently on the NICE group developing the revised Schizophrenia guideline. She also chairs the National Institute for Mental Health (England) Psychosocial Interventions Implementation Group. Alison has a special interest in CBT for Psychosis and lectures on this both nationally and internationally. She was given a visiting senior lectureship at Harvard University Medical School in 2006 and last year was awarded a scholarship to the Beck Institute for Cognitive Therapy in Philadelphia.
